A Moment of Tears

I know I’m built for this
But sometimes I think I’m not
There are days in my life
When the fire seems extra hot
The responsibilities and loads
Just too hard to bear
Focusing on the present
With its every little care
The times are most hard
When I feel so alone
Following your voice
Miles away from home
Still trusting & believing
There is no other way
Knowing the time I seek
Is actually today
Not waiting for it to happen
But bringing it to past
The light behind the shadows
Brightening my path
Determined to please you
In all I say and do
A victorious battle fought
There’s nothing left to lose
And even when the days
Present strong challenges & tears
I consciously remember
You’ve won over our fears
So now, even with wet eyes
I focus on the Son
Whose Life, blood, and death
Indicates I’ve won

Woke Up This Morning

Moving the crowd
Making 'em clap to this
Writing stories to be added
To your Amazon Wish List
Show stopping
Jaw dropping
It's not what "they" said
It's what I know
My mama used to say
I been here befo'e
Probably
I am Spirit
What he says write
I hear it
And scribe...nouns and verbs
Word after word
My ultimate goal to be seen
Not just heard
It's what I do
Not for me, but for you
All the late nights
Greeting the daylight
Yeah, it's fun...and it's work
Making fiction reality 'til my hands hurt
It's a gift, not a curse at all
Using pen and palabras to knock down walls
I've got a plan and I'm all about it
No need to stand on the mountain top and shout it
I just write
Proofread, edit, make it tight
And present it
Everything that's in it is from me
Every dotted "I", every crossed "T"
Says, A-vah Lah-Row
(the phonetic spelling for those who don't know)
It's who I am

Memorable Moments...

Only the men in the Clayton family traveled to the reservation in Bryson City, North Carolina. Robert, Jewel, and Marcus rode in one car. Marcus’ uncles—Richard, Kyle, and Brett—rode in a car by themselves. Each man had taken days off from work or leave from the military to be present for their only nephew’s ceremony. This event was too important to their family to miss.

The Clayton brothers loved each other dearly, but didn’t see eye to eye regarding their father. Each had witnessed too much of his random illicit behavior against them and their mother. For that reason, the older sons rarely came home. Richard, or Richie as his family still called him, was married to one Anastasia Petrof Clayton, a white woman. No way his father was letting her in the house. He barely spoke to his granddaughters, mainly because he said they were whiny and he didn’t like whining little children. Add to that the fact that Richie had moved to California and the outcome was very few trips across country to see an ornery old Indian.

Memorable Moments...

Change is inevitable. All good and bad things come
to an end. It is our responsibility as humans to understand
that change and become one with it. Even when we don’t
understand it, we must still reconcile it.

Memorable Moments...

The fact that Marcus spoke French had long been a sticking point with his grandfather. According to the story, not only had Launa named Marcus after her father, but she had also taught him French before she taught him English. All of this was done in protest to her father-in-law’s bigoted ways. He considered her to be French rather than black because of her light complexion. Therefore, in Poppa C’s ornery mind, she was white. He didn’t like white, unless he was cutting hair. At that point, all money was green and he accepted all green.

Memorable Moments...

While everything went well between Robert and his sons, there was nothing but tension between him and Ebony. There was still bitterness about the decision to terminate her pregnancy and there was mistrust based on lies told by an angry son. No matter what Robert told Ebony, she refused to let her guard down. And though she understood why Jewel had been so cruel, she couldn’t bring herself to surrender to her former lover again. Decisions made, Robert agreed to continue taking care of his sons financially and to visit them as often as he could. And as Robert walked back to his rental car and sped toward the airport, Ebony trembled with tears for the man she still loved and the baby she had sacrificed.

A Birthday Toast

They tell me it's time for a toast. I'd be lying if I said I'm a man of few words. Guess everyone knows that.

The last two years have been amazing. I never imagined being able to share my story with so many people and have each of you embrace me the way you have. The journey to this point has been beautiful and it's because of you.

Each of you have inspired me to be something more than I am. I appreciate that. The Marcus I am today is so much more because of friends, family, individuals that cared enough to give input. Thank you.

So, on my birthday, I celebrate each of you as you celebrate me. Here's to evolution...

Reviews for What's Done In the Dark

Melissa Levine of Independent Professional Book Reviewers

Each scene pulses with a distinctive rhythm. Passion is fleshed out in vivid, hot descriptions making it a lead character in its own right… What’s Done in the Dark is an exciting, sexy, emotional story. It is the type of book that is read in one sitting… and then read again.

“Miss Missy” of Readers Paradise

I am absolutely changed by Marcus and Lynette's story and I curtsey to Ms. LaReaux for introducing me to such wonderfully developed characters.

Leigh O'Donovan of Author’s On The Rise

Readers will be wondering what decisions the characters will make, and how that will affect their lives. In the end, it will make readers think before they do anything in the dark.

Reviews for Song of the Siren

Distinct Ladies Book Club

...This was a very good book about racism. The way Avah brings the characters of this book to life is amazing. I would recommend this book as a must read.

OOSA Online Book Club

... Song of the Siren by Avah LaReaux is a book that will grab you from the very first page. The story was a very good read that leaves you hanging at the end, but it just makes this reader even more eager to find out what is going to happen next. This would make for a great summer read.

Southern Allure Book Club

Song of the Siren by Avah LaReaux is a book that will grab you from the very first page. The story was a very good read that leaves you hanging at the end. Overall, this a very good read about racism and all the obstacles and heart ache that comes along with it. I recommend this book to all readers and book clubs.

Reviews for Bastards

Avah LaReaux has mastered the art of story-telling. In her tale, Bastards, Ms. LaReaux has spun a story filled with laughter, tears, and most of all entertainment. She is very clever with turning a word that usually possesses a negative stigma into a powerful literary work. This authoress will make you look at yourself in the mirror and ask, “Am I a bastard?” Kudos, Avey!

~ Ni'cola Mitchell, Best-Selling Author of Over and Over Again and The Appetizer.

Bastards is Avah LaReaux at her best. Through the voice of Marcus, she skillfully re-defines a traditional term. Bastards is a fast-paced page-turner that kept me on edge from beginning to end.

~ Recha G. Peay, Award Winning Author of Table for Three, Illusion of Love, Intimate Betrayal, and Mystery of A Woman.

What We Working With...

Hey, ladies and gents. I know there are so many people here that it's hard to tell who's who. No worries. You know I got you. The honoree, as you know, is Marcus Clayton. He's rarely seen out, but peope hear a lot about him. Put your pens and notebooks away for a minute. Hold off on asking for autographs and easing in interview questions. Well, maybe a few interview questions will be alright. He loves the attention. To know you're talking to the right guy, here's what you look for...

** Athletic build
** Six-foot-three in height
** Smooth sun-kissed skin
** The face of a naughty muse highlighted by two, deep dimples, and hazel eyes
** Short-cropped hair, close to the scalp. Usually curly, but probably be straight tonight.

Note to family: Look for the one who looks like Uncle Joseph

Looking Ahead

My five-year plan was a lot clearer before I stopped playing ball. I thought I knew exactly where I'd be, what I'd be doing. As you know, that all changed in an instant. I was utterly amazed by the incident. Most call it an accident. I don't. I do say that it was the day I realized that Marcus was not in control. All my life, I had been taught otherwise. The son of a great negotiator, the grandson of an outstanding entrepreneur, the great-grandson of a tribal chief. How could I not believe that my destiny was great?

At first, I thought not being able to play football would diminish who I was. I was short-sighted in that regard. Now I know better. And because I know better, I do better. I guess that's my plan. To continue to do better than I did the day before. To not become stagnant and idle. I've had to learn a lot of hard lessons and, no doubt, I've got plenty more coming. The one thing I will do, though, is keep moving forward. I'm destined to do that, if nothing else.

The Important Things

Flower Color Splash Pictures, Images and Photos

What do I hold dear? That's almost a loaded question. I hold many things dear. Number one and most important is my family, specifically my children. I have two beautiful daughters and they have me wrapped around their pinky fingers. I don't complain because I like it. I deserve it, right? Next are my sons, Joshua and Austin. I'm blessed to have them. They are hard-headed sometimes, but they aren't bad boys. I'm glad to have the two of them to teach my heart to. I love my daughters and I teach them things, but there's nothing like a heart-to-heart with another male, especially when that male is your seed. My kids complete me, let me know there's more in the universe than fame and fortune. To them I'm not Marcus Clayton, famed linebacker, T.V. star. I'm just daddy. I love that.

Special women? You being funny now, Avah. My wife of course. Lynette Clayton is a jewel. My mom and grandmother have always been special. They are why I appreciate women. They worked hard to raise me, love me, provide for me. Who couldn't love someone who loves you the way they have? And yeah, I'll say it for you. Renee. Austin's mother means more to me than I can tell you in this interview. She's very special. She holds a piece of my heart no other woman will ever have.

Well, that's my list of special people. What else you got?

A Day in the Life

I've told you before that I grew up in a religious household. My grandmother was very prominent in our church, First A.M.E. of Charlotte. My parents were members there as well and as such, I was expected to be at every service, rehearsal, practice, planning meeting...you get the point. It was a way of life for me when I was younger. I couldn't really say anything if I was tired or sick or just plain didn't want to go. Poppa C, my grandfather, was my only advocate, but Ma'dear rarely listened to him regarding spiritual things. That's funny because he was actually one of the most spiritual guys I knew.

My granddad...Robert Julian Clayton. I started calling him Poppa C when I learned to talk and I called him that until he left the planet. Apparently, he liked it. He changed the name of his barber shop to Poppa C's when I was two. After that, everybody called him C. He was my hero and my best friend. It broke my heart when he died. Did it make me stronger? Not really. I think I was as strong then as I am now. I just realize it now.

When I think about it, I attribute more of my knowledge of God and my place in the universe to Poppa C than to Ma'dear. Don't misunderstand me. I'm not saying Ma'dear didn't lay a good foundation, because she did. But it was C who taught me what it meant to be created in the image of perfection. I learned that by sitting at the feet of twelve Cherokee warriors, old men. One was C and another was the Chief of the tribe, my great-grandfather. They are the ones who taught me everything I use today. I attribute that to Robert Clayton.

Anyway, I hate when you get me talking about this stuff. Quick picking my psyche. Next question...

In Marcus' Eyes

I wouldn't consider myself a player or a playboy. Although, my brother-in-law, Keith, calls me that like it's my name. I simply say I love women.

My grandfather taught me a lot of things and one of those was appreciation for the opposite sex.Even the Bible teaches that a man should love a woman with his entire being. I would like to think I'm doing my part.

I know what you're thinking. I'm going too far. Don't put God in this, right? Now we're talking about something Ma'dear taught me. She always said that no matter where I went or what I did, I should take God with me. If I was going to the club, I better have him with me if I expected to make it out. Well, I was never much for the club or most of what went on inside those walls. But I understood what she meant. So whatever I did, I made sure not to forget that no matter what, God was watching.

A contradiction? Not really. How is that any different than people who smoke, over eat, under eat, whatever? It's not. God is watching all of us. Justified? Not in my own actions, no. Look, I've got faults, for sure. I'm human. But you love me because I'm real with my shit. It is what it is.

Caramel Vixen is a native of North Carolina, where she resides with her family. She also juggles being a full-time student and computer lab tutor on her campus. For more information on the BBW Erotica Princess, visit www.caramelvixen84.webs.com and www.officeaffairs.webs.com.

Office Affairs Synopsis:

Plus size beauty, Allysia, has accomplished a lot, yet she feels a void. Will she open her heart and accept love or will she only open her legs? Davis is a single, hard working father. He lost his wife to cancer. Davis doesn't date. The one woman he wants won't give him the time of day. If Allysia would only open her heart to Davis, he would fill that void in her life.

"Office Affairs is a funny, erotic novel about love and the discovery of self worth!"

Discovering the Novel:

A-Spot: Who is the main character in the story and what is s/he like?

Caramel Vixen: The main character in Office Affairs is Allysia Donaldson, and she is a firecracker. She’s funny and sassy, with mad sex appeal. She's proud of being a BBW (big beautiful woman) and is not afraid to show it. Allysia is the fashionista that all women envy.

A-Spot: Who is your favorite character and why?

Caramel Vixen: One of my favorite characters in the story is actually LaDonna Jenkins. She is so funny and innocent.

A-Spot: What was the best part about writing this book?

Caramel Vixen: The best part about writing this book was that it was the first thing I had ever written other than poetry and I’ll never have a debut release again.

A-Spot: If you could add yourself as a character in the book, who would you be and how would you affect the story?

Caramel Vixen: Wow, I loved this question. No one has ever asked me this before. It really made me think. I would want to be a banker in the building that Allysia owns, that houses Ample Delights. My name would be Trisha Gardner and I would have my sights on Davis, the object of Allysia’s secret affections. Allysia acted like she didn’t have time for him. Trisha would have gladly taken him off her hands.

A-Spot: If you could carry one character from Office Affairs over to another novel, who would it be and why?

Caramel Vixen: It would be Allysia and her fashion company, Ample Delights. The majority of all of my female characters are plus size women and that’s who Allysia's company caters to, exclusively.

Chapter Two Excerpt

{A toast as we read...}

Camille Clayton usually left the house at eight o’clock every morning. She was predictable that way. She didn’t have to be at work until nine, but Mrs. Clayton liked to be early to most everywhere she went. Her husband, Robert, knew that about her.

During the school year, Marcus usually arrived at his grandparents’ house around seven-thirty every morning. The only exception was when he spent the night with his father’s parents, which was most of the time. And like his grandmother, whom he called “Ma’dear,” Marcus was predictable. Robert knew that, too.

Ma’dear and Robert, or Poppa C as Marcus called him, lived next door to their son and his wife, which provided an excellent convenience with regards to childcare. It had been that way since Marcus was born. Though he was not the oldest grandchild, he was the only boy, and was Poppa C’s favorite. It was a given that Marcus would be wherever his grandfather was and that fact was never challenged or questioned. It just was.

For the most part, Marcus practically lived next door because Launa and Jewel both worked long hours most days. This left their only son alone. In a big house. By himself. Even with Marcus having been trained to check in with his grandparents before and after school and even with him playing football at the Bradhurst Club, adult supervision was still needed for a youth as creative as Marcus had become. So, when Jewel and Launa said “check in,” they meant, “Take your butt to your grandparents’ house and stay there until we come get you.” And that’s just what Marcus did.

During the summer months, the routine was virtually the same. Ma’dear would leave at eight o’clock and Marcus would show up a short while prior, and always just in time to eat breakfast before he was out the door and up the street to visit his friends. His ritual.

At eight-thirty, Poppa C’s Barber Shop would open for business with the flicker of fluorescent lights and the sound of jazz music as the side entrance would open and the screen door was unlocked. At eight-forty-five, a tall, slender, honey brown-skinned woman would walk through the side entrance, close the door, lock it, and slide out of her A-line dress. By nine o’clock, there was no mistaking the lady’s yells for anything other than pleasure. At a little after ten o’clock, the lady would be redressed and headed toward the side door to go about her day. That was also usually when Marcus would appear in the doorway, scowling.

“What, Dino?”

Marcus generally refused to answer.

“If you came to clean the shop, wait until later this evening.”

“I didn’t come to clean the shop. You just opened up.”

“Then why you standing there giving me the evil eye?”

“’Cause I hope you catch something.”

“I’ma catch yo’ little ass and beat it.”

“I’ll tell Ma’dear you doing the oochie coochie with Miss Anna.”

“And I’ll kill you.”

“You better watch yourself, Granddad. I’m your biggest ally.” Turning to head back up the hill, Marcus would add, “Or your biggest enemy.”

That was their relationship. Marcus and Robert Clayton. The ten-year-old and his grandfather. Unfortunately, that was the way they interacted for years after the first time Marcus walked in on his grandfather, having sex with someone other than his grandmother.

Bastards Characters

Poppa C
Given name, Robert Julian Clayton. The patriarch of the Clayton family. He is Marcus' grandfather and "life coach."

Camille Clayton
Marcus calls her Ma'dear. She is the Clayton family matriarch and the glue that holds the gang together. Camille bore four sons to Robert and raised his daughter after her mother's death.

Jewel Clayton
The third son born to Robert and Camille Clayton. Jewel is a hard-working, fair, and very handsome man. He has one son, Marcus.

Launa Clayton
This Creole beauty knows how to deal with Clayton men and she does not back down. Young, witty, and determined, Launa is fluent in French and the art of feather ruffling. She is Marcus' mother and the apple of Jewel's eye.

Ronnie Ford
Ronnie doesn't live in Bradhurst, but he may as well. He gets a rocky start with Marcus and the boys of the community, but he quickly redeems himself - or does he. A victim of a broken home, Ronnie takes up residence with his Aunt Ebony and slides into Bradhurst like a thief in the night.

Chad Richardson
Raised in a single-parent home, Chad makes up for that fact by spending lots of time at Poppa C's and Ma'dear's house. Chad is Marcus' best friend. Together, they wreak havoc in Bradhurst.

Lynette Brenner
The youngest of the three Brenner beauties, Lynette has her father wrapped around her finger and completely snowed. Her family calls her "Shelly," but Marcus calls her "Nette." Once her sights are set, Heaven help the neighborhood.

Renee Toliver
She's young. She's talented. She's absolutely gorgeous. And none of that matters to her. Ambition is the name of the game and Renee, or Emily as her family calls her, is planning to make a name for herself in the television industry. She better watch out. Marcus is her next assignment.

Marcus Clayton
The heart and soul of the Lost & Found series, our main character evolves and transforms before our very eyes. And this is where it all begins.

Advance Reviews

Reviews are very important in this industry. There have been debates about that fact, but I don't see anyone not wanting others to read their books. When the time came for the galley reviews for Bastards, I was fortunate enough to have two of the industry's best review the novel. Below are the initial reviews for book three, Bastards, as shared by two highly respected names in the literary field, Ni'Cola Mitchell and Recha Peay.

In the Beginning...

I started Bastards in 2002. Not unlike most artists, I was inspired by events that were going on around me. They weren't what most people would consider catastrophic or even important, but they were enough for me to put my fingers to the keyboard and begin writing.

Bastards started off as a collection of eight inter-related stories. The characters weren't all related by blood, but there was something that connected all of them. In its original form, the eight Bastards tales were modern-day versions of Bible stories. Some of the stories were well-known in religious circles, others were not, but that was the premise. As I began to write, the stories grew and the concept took on another life.

My first Bastards story was called “Gomer”. “Gomer” was a tale of a married couple experiencing the pains of infidelity. And yes, just like in the Bible, the wife was a...uh hmm...she was promiscuous - to say the very least. I only got half-way through that story before I realized the main character had more going on than met my mind.

While I was working on “Gomer”, a new stronger character emerged. His name, Marcus Clayton. Marcus presented very powerfully. He was arrogant, rude, and demanded my full attention. Not only this, but he was fine as hell (literally) and I had to give him what he wanted. I began writing Marcus' story, which was originally entitled “Before a Fall” (pride goeth before a fall) and before long, that story led to what I thought was the last chapter in the original manuscript.

So, there I was, with two and half chapters of what I thought was an eight chapter book written. I was pleased, unsure, but pleased. And then…I put it away. The very things I was writing about, fear, uncertainty, inherited teachings, all bombarded my mind and I started second-guessing whether or not anyone would really be interested in reading my work. The manuscript sat for four years with me coddling it and kissing it, but not releasing it.

Fast forward to 2006. I am now in my home office and the desire to write is so overwhelming I can’t eat, sleep, or speak in complete sentences. I sit at my computer for hours on end and in three months, working 18-20 hours every day, my debut novel was born. You all know it as What’s Done in the Dark.

So, that’s how it started. That’s how Marcus compelled me (probably with those beautiful hazel eyes) to tell his story. The concept hasn’t changed. It has become a series. There was no way I could tell what happened without telling why. For that reason, each installment of the series takes readers deeper into Marcus’ world, starting with the fruit and ending at the root. That’s why we are here today. To celebrate the journey.

Thanks for coming and sharing with me.
